Trader Joe’s is a great source for fun and inexpensive treats that are especially enjoyed by those who aren’t fortunate enough to have a TJ’s in their town.
Valentine’s baskets can include candies, cookies and other red favorites, including cherry toaster pastries or granola bars and dried cherries or cranberries.
The influx of pumpkin themed items at Trader Joe’s each fall inspired me to send my aunt a box with pumpkin granola bars, pumpkin bread mix, pumpkin butter and pumpkin seeds.
I periodically send my dad a box of his favorite snacks – peanut butter crackers, oatmeal raisin cookies and cashews.
When my son was sick at college, I sent a box with chickenless noodle soup, chewable vitamin C, lemon echinacea tea, a box of tissues and a few of his favorite snack foods.
Note that if presentation isn’t a big deal, you can generally reduce mailing costs by sending your items in a flat rate box from the US Postal Service. You can get a lot into the medium or large box and the rate includes delivery confirmation and $50 insurance. Enclose a card and stuff both ends of the box with some colorful tissue paper and it’ll make the recipient’s day.
Keep in mind that Trader Joe’s is known for their bargains so if you need an upscale gift for someone, you may want to steer clear of the TJ’s branded items (most of the store). Consider a fresh fruit basket or a selection of beers or wines. You can even repackage some items, such as candy, cookies, dried fruits and nuts in pretty cellophane party bags or glass jars tied with ribbon or gold cord.
